Pwllheli RFC 19 Mold RFC 8

Conditions were excellent for rugby at Parc Bodegroes on Saturday. The pitch was a little greasy after the heavy overnight rain but other than a light breeze it was an ideal rugby day.
Pwllheli started really strongly. They pressed from the kick off and went ahead with an Osian P.Jones penalty. The home side continued to press through their forwards and should have scored after being camped on the Mold line for five minutes. Their reward for the pressure was a second penalty by Jones after nine minutes. This seemed to stir Mold and they put together some neat back line moves before they were awarded a penalty after fourteen minutes. Aled Ellis converted the kick. With both sides being quite rusty after the November Series break the match was punctuated by several unforced errors. The packs began to even themselves out with some committed tackles going in from both teams. The highlight of the afternoon came after twenty nine minutes. Pwllheli's fullback Deio Brunelli fielded a lose kick in his own twenty two. He took on the oncoming cover before passing to left wing Robin Hughes Jones. He in turn beat three men in a scything run before releasing the ball to flanker Tom Parry who raced in to complete an excellent ninety metre foray. Jones added the conversion. Mold reacted strongly. They took the game to Pwllheli and went close several times but their only reward for their efforts was a forty fourth minute penalty by Ellis which hit the post. The half time score was Pwllheli thirteen, Mold three.
The second half mirrored the first. Pwllheli took their chances with two further penalties by Osian P.Jones which extended their lead to nineteen to three. Mold's frustrations grew and they had two players yellow carded, the first after fourteen minutes and the second on twenty nine minutes. As often happens losing these players lifted the Mold side and they scored a well taken try on thirty four minutes. The scorer was full back Mike Rogers. They missed the conversion. The game was frantic until the end but there was to be no more scoring.
The young referee Dewi Philips allowed the game to flow. His consistency is precisely what players want.
Mold certainly made Pwllheli work hard for their home win. They are a well drilled side and their backs were fluent  throughout the match. Their try was top drawer and Pwllheli may be fortunate that Mold 's option taking did not match their potential. This was a solid unspectacular win for the Lleyn side. The performance in defence was excellent and generally play was several notches above our performance against Caernarfon. There are clearly areas to work on but at least after the November Series we are having a run of four games between now and Christmas.
Coaches, players and supporters accept that we will have to up several  gears if we are to get a result at Bethesda in the Swalec Plate on Saturday.
