Pwllheli RFC 45 Llandudno 13

With Pwllheli's only league defeat of the season coming away against Llandudno the home side had the utmost respect for their opponents today. Considering the downpours on the Friday the pitch was in good condition and the match was played under blue skies.

The good sized crowd saw Llandudno take the initiative from the outset. They used their heavy pack to bludgeon through the Pwllheli defence and only then tried to release their backs. The home side has worked hard on its defensive strategy in recent months and the investment paid off. Llandudno deservedly took the lead with an eighth minute penalty by Tom Hacknell. The home side gradually upped the pace of the game and counter attacked from deep. Pwllheli's first score came from a try by full back Deio Brunelli. Osian Parry Jones slotted a fine touchline conversion. The second try started just outside the Pwllheli twenty two. They gathered a loose kick by Llandudno and moved the ball left. Swift interpassing put number eight Tom Parry use his pace to score wide out. Again Jones was successful with the difficult conversion.

Llandudno still had a lot of possession but Pwllheli's abilty to switch from the rush defence to a drift defence paid dividends. Pwllheli's third came from a fifty metre break and centre John Pugh took the final pass to touch down. Again Jones added the two points. Against the run of play Pwllheli latched on to a dropped Llandudno pass. John Pugh fly kicked ahead and made ground on the Llandudno cover to win the race for the touchdown. The bonus point try was the last action of a first half which saw two sides giving their all but Pwllheli just having the edge in finishing off their chances. Pwllheli twenty six Llandudno three.

The second period saw Pwllheli having to compete hard for every ball but with ball in hand they were always threatening. The first score of the half came from exciting back row prospect Eifion Roberts who finished off another sweeping movement.J ones kicked his fourth conversion of the match to put Pwllheli clear. Winger Sam Mc Lean gave the game a fairer balance when he took his opportunity well to score his side's first try which went unconverted. Pwllheli's riposte was firstly from a touch of individual skill by centre John Pugh who turned Llandudno's cover to touch down The conversion by Jones was successful. It was Pugh again who touched down for Pwllheli's seventh try. The visitors ' never say die attitude was epitomised by wing Mc Lean who forced himself over to score. The final whistle went soon after.

This was an encouraging try bonus win against a well drilled and capable Llandudno side. Pwllheli were good value for their seven try to two victory and it gave them some redemption following their woeful away performance in Llandudno back in September.

The Lleyn's side's second fifteen faced a mammoth task as they hosted League leaders Mold at Bodegroes. Pwllheli's seconds have struggled to get a run of games this season and this is a worrying trend that the powers that be need to consider carefully. As it was Pwllheli edged the game by  eight points to five to take over the lead in the North Wales Seconds League. To complete a thoroughly fruitful day for Pwllheli their Youths won away at Colwyn Bay by seventeen points to nil.

Pwllheli face yet another difficult fixture when they travel away to Bethesda on Saturday. Though the hosts lost last week Pwllheli know that on the day Bethesda can beat any side in the league. Pwllheli will prepare well for the match and will hope they can select a full strength side.
