Pwllheli RFC 23 Bala RFC 17

Fortunately for players and the large crowd the rain held off during the match. The pitch remained soggy after the recent heavy downpours and the swirling wind made it difficult for both teams..

Bala came to Pwllheli with intent. The previous week they had taken Nant to the wire and they wanted to go one better during their visiit to Bodegroes. They certainly started the better . With Rhydian Jones orchestrating his team Bala took the game to Pwllheli. With the Bala pack driving into the Pwllheli twenty two the fly half saw three was space on the far right wing. His cross kick found wing Iestyn Jones in space and he crossed over to score a fine try.The conversion missed. After only five minutes Bala had a player yellow carded for a high tackle. Pwllheli took full advantage. A swift passing movement took them down the left. The forwards then set up a driving maul from the ensuing line out and a concerted drive saw flanker Chris Studt touch down to equalise the scores. The conversion missed. On twelve minutes Pwllheli's diminutive scrum half Danial Williams mesmerised the opposition with a series of outrageous sidesteps to create a gap for centre Ianto Parri to crash over. The match flowed to and fro and after a series of astute kicks Bala reached the Pwllheli twenty two. One missed tackle allowed Bala's scrum half Clwyd Roberts to scamper over in the corner. Pwllheli's riposte was almost immediate as on twenty five minutes they retook the lead with a penalty goal from Osian P.Jones. With both sides wholly committed the game was on a knife edge. Pwllheli lost second row Elis Griffith through injury and he was replaced by Elgan Davies. Both sides had their chances but half time came after forty four minutes with Pwllheli holding a slender thirteen to ten lead.

Pwllheli started the second period the stronger. Bala tried to use the elements to pin Pwllheli back but the home side countered at very opportunity. After eleven minutes centre John Pugh was the beneficiary as his fellow threequarters created a gap for Pugh to exploit to cross the whitewash. Pwllheli then brought fresh legs into the back row as the ever heavier pitch took its' toll. On twenty six minutes it was John Pugh who scored for Pwllheli with a potentially crucial try bonus point as he scored his team's fourth try. Pwllheli were now in control but to Bala's credit they caught Pwllheli napping in the third minute of injury time. Deservedly it was Bala's fly half Rhydian Jones who scored the try and kicked the conversion to earn his team a losing bonus point.

Pwllheli's Man of the Match with an outstanding performance was back rower Harri Parry with Rhydian Jones shining for the visitors.

Pwllheli's seconds shaded a close match against their Bala counterparts by winning by seven points to five. Earlier Pwllheli Youths had earned a convincing home win against visitors Wrexham.  Pwllheli's home form continued on the Sunday as their Under,13 , 14 and 15s  hosted Nant Conwy at Bodegroes. All three home sides won.

Pwllheli now face Nant Conwy away in what must be the league match of the season. With Nant going really strongly and Pwllheli travelling to Llanrwst on the back of fourteen consecutive league wins this could be some match. Kick off as always is 2.30 so try to come and support the team.
