SSE SWALEC RUGBY LEAGUE PRESS RELEASE

DOUBLE CELEBRATIONS FOR PWLLHELI rfc WITH SWALEC DIVISION 1 north TITLE AND NORTH WALES PLATE

There were double celebrations all around at Pwllheli RFC on Saturday 2 May as they won the North Wales Plate and were crowned as Champions of SSE SWALEC 1 North at Colwyn Bay’s Eirias Park.

Pwllheli carried off the league title with 92 points, five points clear of their nearest rivals and last year’s Champions Nant Conwy. The club won 20 of their league games played this season having lost only one league game since September 2013.

The Pwllheli Head Coach Ian Jones believed that building on the team’s camaraderie and closeness by touring other rugby nations has helped develop his players into Champions.

Ian Jones, who is also an ex-Captain at the club, said: “Last year we toured South Africa for two weeks and I believe that the trip is partly key to our success. The boys trained and played together for two weeks and built that bond and trust against opponents who have rugby in their blood. I want to build on this year on year so next season we’re visiting France.”

Mr Jones is excited about the future prospects at Pwllheli RFC.

“The club is going from strength to strength. It’s in a good place financially, we have great youth and junior systems in place and our Second Team also won silverware on the weekend. Everyone in the town is behind the team and they show that by the effort that they put in every week to support us at home and away.

“We’ve worked incredibly hard over the past three years,” he explained. “We’ve finished as runners up for the past two seasons but we’ve achieved the target and toppled Nant Conwy from their perch. What we do now is continue to build and grow. Our youth structure will allow new players to move up the ranks and taste first team action and learn from the experienced players in the squad. Last year we promoted four of the youth teams and they’ve played regularly for us. In pre-season we’ll look to do the same again.”

WRU Board Member Alwyn Jones said: “This is a well deserved victory for Pwllheli. They have been one of the most consistent teams in North Wales over the past two or three seasons and they deserve their place at the top of Division 1. To have only lost one game in this competitive division is a feat in itself. Congratulations to all at Pwllheli RFC.”

SSE SWALEC is the national community partner of the Welsh Rugby Union and sponsors both the SSE SWALEC Leagues and SSE SWALEC Cup, Plate and Bowl competitions.

Colin Banks, Acting Head of Sponsorship at SSE SWALEC, added: “Our strong partnership with the WRU and its clubs goes back a number of years and we’re very pleased to be doing more for grassroots rugby in Wales through our sponsorship of the SSE SWALEC Leagues. It has been another strong season for Welsh rugby as a whole and we have seen some impressive performances at club level. Many congratulations to Pwllheli RFC on claiming the title.”
