Pwllheli RFC 25 Mold RFC 13

The game was preceded by a Minutes Silence to the respect the sad loss of Robin Llyr Evans who died recently in a tragic accident while working in China. Robin who had captained Pwllheli Youths a few short seasons ago and played rugby for Pwllheli last season will be sadly missed.

Once again the teams were blessed with fine rugby conditions with  a firm pitch and with only a slight breeze. It was all Pwllheli in the first quarter as they took the game to the visitors. It took only four minutes to register the first score through a penalty by Manu Acebo Pwllheli's fly half. Pwllheli had all the territory but the hefty Mold team worked hard to keep Pwllheli out. Once again Pwllheli were  heavily outweighed in the scrums . However the Lleyn side struggled to attain parity in the loose and this facet of their game was not effective as it has been. Twenty minutes in Pwllheli created a quick overlap on the right and winger Osian P. Jones took full advantage as he beat his opposite number to touch down. Acebo added the conversion. Mold reacted positively and were able to to secure clean ball for their bulky back line. They used their physicality to take the game to Pwllheli and Pwllheli were penalised and had a flanker  yellow carded on thirty seven minutes. The resulting penalty by Mold's Ollie Jenner cut their deficit. The home side's structured defence held until the half time whistle went on forty four minutes with Pwllheli leading by ten points to three.

Pwllheli extended their lead on seven minutes with another Acebo penalty. They then lost centre Deio Brunelli through injury on twelve minutes. Mold took advantage of Pwllheli's restructuring and on fourteen minutes scored a deserved try  by David Clegg . Pwllheli lost their other starting centre Facundo Aguirres on sixteen minutes. Pwllheli regrouped and it as Mold who were now under pressure. They had a forward yellow carded for a high tackle. At the next line out Pwllheli set up a rolling maul and after several drives captain Nick Butterworth scored Pwllheli's second try wide out. Fly half Manu Acebo slotted the difficult conversion. Mold's discipline again let them down and they were handed another yellow card on twenty nine minutes. They Lleyn side took the opportunity and winger Robin Hughes Jones cut through to score his team's third try. The conversion attempt missed.

Now was the time for Pwllheli to turn the screw but sloppy play saw the ball dropped in the Mold twenty two. The loose ball was picked up from Mold and Ryan Kirby did well to score from a full eighty metres. Mold lost another player with a yellow card but Pwllheli failed to extend their lead in the final minutes of the second half.

Though Pwllheli were never under any real threat of losing this match they will ask questions of themselves .They allowed Mold a glimmer of hope when Pwllheli could and should have put the game to rest far sooner. Nonethess Pwllheli notched up  another home victory in what was a below par performance by the Lleyn side. Though Ruthin have not been at their best recently Pwllheli will have to be far more clinical if they are to come away with the points at Ruthin on Saturday. Transport arrangements will be confirmed during the week but the bus may have to leave the club as early as 10.00 as this fixture has to kick off at 1.30 as directed by the WRU.
