Pwllheli RFC 56 Dolgellau RFC 8

In a match preceded by heavy rain the Pwllheli pitch held up really well. There was a gusty variable wind which did occasionally impact on the line kicking of both teams.

The home side started the stronger and took the game to the visitors. They were rewarded after seven minutes with an Osian P.J.ones penalty. Dolgellau came back  into then game strongly. Their chunky pack kept possession  very effectively and as they went through the phases they won a penalty. Geraint Thomas slotted the kick to even the scoring. Pwllheli threatened whenever they had the ball whereas Dolgellau's kicking  game seemed to lack purpose and yielded very little territorial gain. With the sides jostling for supremacy Pwllheli were awarded a scrum forty metres out on eighteen minutes.. The ball was quickly hooked and scrum half Robin Hughes Jones flat footed the visiting defence to race through to score under the posts. Osian P.Jones added the conversion.

The Dolgellau eight continued to press and gave their half backs ample  quality ball. However it was Pwllheli who  scored next. Using their limited possession effectively in mid field Pwllheli switched the ball left. Two subtle passes were enough to put centre Deio Brunelli in the clear. On thirty five minutes Dolgellau had their just reward when centre Dan Brazier crossed over for five points. With Pwllheli's linout working smoothly they won  clean ball wide out on the right. The ball was again swiftly moved across the line for an overlap to be created for right wing Arwel Thomas who surged over  to score in the corner .Osian P.Jones slotted the difficult kick to take the half time score to Pwllheli twenty two, Dolgellau eight.

The Lleyn team started well in the second period. Astute kicks pinned the visitors back in their own twenty two. Pwllheli drove from a line out  and were awarded a penalty when their driving maul was pulled down. Pwllheli opted for the scrum and again set up another driving maul This too resulted in a penalty.Wanting to maintain the pressure Pwllheli again opted for a scrum When the resultant driving maul was brought down the referee immediately awarded a penalty try and secured a try bonus point for the home side.. Osian P.Jones's  kick put Pwllheli twenty nine to eight ahead.

Dolgellau's pride kicked in and they matched Pwllheli in all phases for the following twenty minutes. Despite their stalwart efforts they could not break through Pwllheli's defensive line and they were punished on twenty five minutes with an excellent score from Pwllheli full back Danial Glyn. Even better was to come for the home supporters three minutes later when right wing Osian P.Jones used his power and pace to score from fully sixty metres out. This seemed to knock the stuffing out of Dolgellau and Pwllheli scored a further three tries - on thirty one minutes by Danial Glyn, on thirty five minutes by Osian P.Jones and the coup de grace on forty minutes by scrum half Robin Hughes Jones. Only one of the last four tries was converted.

The score perhaps does not reflect the work of the Dolgellau team. They competed hard  for most of the eighty minutes but were undone by Pwllheli's pace and better option taking. This was a well earned positive result for Pwllheli. The backs scored the points but  it was Pwllheli's set pieces who laid the foundation of the win. Both the line outs and scrum worked well and the backline were crisp and minimised their mistakes throughout. Pwllheli's defence was also well organised and Dolgellau will rue the seeming opportunities they had to score.

Pwllheli face a very tough test on Saturday as they travel to Llandudno. The Llandudno side is going very strongly this season and have already taken some notable scalps and the Lleyn side know that only the best will do to come away with the points.
Pwllheli seconds move up to third place in the Seconds League as they did well to beat Dolgellau seconds by twenty four points to twelve.at Bodegroes. The Youth team lost away to Caernarfon by  thirteen points to eight.
