Pwllheli RFC 71 Ruthin RFC 3

Conditions at Parc Bodegroes were ideal for rugby in the top bottom versus clash between these two old adversaries. Both teams were well supported in this seventh league match of the season. The visitors started strongly and were clearly not intimidated by the vocal home crowd. In these opening phases the packs were even in the scrums and lines but Pwllheli benefitted from a faster more mobile back row. It was Ruthin who impressed in the early stages as they kicked well to gain ground before attacking the Pwllheli line using their heavier players to bludgeon the home side's defence. The Lleyn side were penalised after six minutes for creeping offside and Ruthin's Deian Williams confidently kicked the ensuing penalty. Pwllheli upped the ante and started to make good ground via their pacy back line. On eleven minutes wing Osian Parry Jones was the beneficiary as the Ruthin cover were sliced open before he was put in the clear to score wide out. Parry Jones slotted the difficult touchline conversion. Three minutes later space was created on the right wing and Pwllheli's Robin Hughes Jones outpaced the would be tacklers to score close to the far right touchline. The in form Osian Parry Jones added the two points with another fine kick. Ruthin regrouped and kept the ball tighter. The policy was effective for some ten minutes but almost inevitably Pwllheli threatened whenever they had the ball. With the home side now beginning to edge the scrums Pwllheli's captain and scrum half Nick Butterworth took advantage of a retreating Ruthin pack to crash through a gap in their defence. Parry Jones added the conversion. Once more Ruthin worked very hard to stabilise the match and had several incisive incursions into the Pwllheli half. The home defence remained organised and committed and teamwork again came to the fore. Pwllheli were gradually turning the screw and began dominating territory and quality possession. On forty three minutes Butterworth was given a secure platform to attack the Ruthin line and he duly obliged to score his team's fourth and try bonus wining score. Osian Parry Jones' kick took the half time score to Pwllheli twenty eight Ruthin three. Having travelled with only sixteen players Ruthin's efforts gradually began to wane. On seven minutes they were breached by a strong run by Kiwi Kelemete and Jones added the straight forward kick. Pwllheli introduced their bench and the fresh legs gave Pwllheli added impetus.Huw Williams, Pwllheli's Man of the Match, scored on fifteen minutes. The conversion attempt hit the post. Three minutes later it was Williams again who stormed over .The kick missed. Pwllheli now dominated the match and though Ruthin's players never gave up they were overwhelmed as Pwllheli scored another four tries. Kelemete scored his second on twenty five mintues, substitute Deio Brunelli scored after twenty eight minutes, Kelemete got his hattrick on thirty minutes and Butterworth also got his third five minutes later Osian Parry Jones added two conversions. Pwllheli now need to focus on their tough away draw with Ynysddu in Round Two of the Swalec Plate. Gwent side Ynysddu are currently going really well in Division 2 East and lie third .Kick off is at 2.30. Travel arrangements have now been confirmed with the team coach leaving the club at 7.30 prompt on Saturday 29 October. The second XV impressed against a much bulkier Caernarfon side. They won the League match at Bodegroes by twenty seven points to fourteen. Their five tries secured them a league bonus point.
