Cobra RFC 12 v 28 Pwllheli RFC

Pwllheli travelled to Meifod with a depleted squad, many of the established first team players unable to travel through work commitments, injuries and mid winter holidays. The bench included three youth players, their own fixture against Bala having been called off.

The Pwllheli forwards in particular struggled to establish any pattern during the first half. It was a sunny afternoon in Meifod but the ground was very heavy and better suited the bigger Cobra pack. After fifteen minutes, the home team’s flanker Owain Morris forced his way over the Pwllheli tryline. Outside half Rhodri Jones failed with the conversion and later was unsuccessful with two penalty attempts at the posts.

Play resumed after half time with the score 5-0 and for ten munites, Cobra’s tactics prevailed and they increased the score with prop Bryn Edwards’ try, improved by Rhodri Jones. The visitors changed the structure of their forwards by introducing James Mortimer to the second row and reverting to a tried and tested front row. Soon, the Llyn side began to dominate the play and after fifteen minutes prop Alwyn Trenholme found a way over the tryline for his fist touchdown of the season, Osian Parry Jones adding the extras with a well taken conversion. Three minutes later, with the home side now playing with 14 men, the feat was repeated with Trenholme scoring his second try and Parry Jones converting to put the visitors ahead by 14-12.

The confidence had returned to the away side and they threatened for the rest of the half. On thirty two minutes Cobra's fly half 's grubber kick was hacked on by Pwllheli 's fly half John Pugh. His pace outsrtripped the would be defenders and he won the race to touch down between the posts. Parry Jones added the extras for a 12-21 score. Pwllheli continued to pressurise the home team but it was not until injury time that winger and another newcomer Gethin Vaughan Jones somehow managed to squeeze through and over the defending Cobra team to score the bonus earning try wide out. Parry Jones’ difficult conversion attempt was a beauty, curling inside the far post to give a final score of 12-28.

This was a considerable performance by both teams given the conditions. COBRA were  a wholly different proposition to what  they had been at Bodegroes. They posed a real threat to Pwllheli throughout the game. We wish them well for the rest of the season.

Stalwart Alwyn Trenholme's brace of tries made him the Man of The Match and it was good to see him at his best. The much changed team were a credit to the Club and we are grateful for their commitment.

The result meant it was staus quo at the head of the league table so it is still all to play for.
