Pwllheli RFC 31 Llangefni RFC 12

Fortunately the recent heavy rain held off for the match as the Club's stand is temporarily out of commission as work on extending the facility and installing seats is being undertaken. A good sized crowd came to support the teams currently placed first and fourth in League Division One North.
It was Pwllheli who started the better. They took the game to the visitors and were camped in Llangefni's twenty two for the opening minutes. After six minutes Pwllheli went through the phases and captain Nick Butterworth scythed through to score under the posts. Wing Osian Parry Jones added the two points. The visitors remained under threat  but on the eleventh minute Pwllheli were caught in possession in an attack. Llangefni ripped away the ball to overturn possession and with Pwllheli  configured in attack they were able to move the ball right . Quick slick passing put centre Greg Horsman clear to touch down.the conversion attempt narrowly missed.
Heavy tackles were the norm and no quarter was asked for  or given. Llangefni'r burly and experienced pack gradually came to the fore. They retained possession effectively but a few misjudged kicks let Pwllheli off the hook. It was perhaps then against the run of play when Pwllheli scored their third try on twenty minutes. Backs and forwards combined well and wing Robin Hughes Jones was put into space. He took his opportunity well and shrugged off several would be tackles to cross the whitewash wide out on the left. The conversion missed.
Llangefni were not to be subdued. Twenty four minutes in it was their turn to put together and effective combination of passes .Their physical scrum half Mark Gray was put clear to beat the Pwllheli cover. The successful conversion was made by fullback Rhys Hughes to bring the scores level at twelve points each.
The Lleyn side kept their composure and although with limited possession they were able to conjure a score in the thirty first minute. Once again Pwllheli did well to recycle ruck ball.Scrum half Gwilym Parry switched the line of attack and centre Deio Brunelli scored a well taken try. Osian Parry Jones added the two points.Both sides continued to struggle to create clear cut chances and the half time came on forty four minutes  with Pwllheli leading by nineteen points to twelve.
The second period saw Pwllheli secure the try bonus point fourth try as fly half John Pugh beat the cover to score wide out after only four minutes. Parry Jones slotted the difficult conversion. The next twenty minutes saw Llangefni have the ascendancy in  possession and territory but a combination of stalwart Pwllheli defence and a lack of a sharp cutting edge kept them from scoring. The home side did well at the set scrum despite the weight disparity. Their back row did well throughout the game and their pace secured them vital loose ball. Minutes passed as the visitors went through phase after phase. They came close to adding to their score severasl times but were thwarted by last ditch well organised defending. On thirty minutes the visitors went down to fourteen men as a back rower was red carded for foul play. Pwllheli are increasingly tactically adept as the season progresses. They were able to suck in the remaining seven LLangefni forwards to create space for fly half John Pugh to score his side's fifth try.  Pwllheli then absorbed the pressure for the remaining seven minutes and were relieved to have secured a bonus point win against a strong Llangefni fifteen.
This was not a game for the faint hearted. It was the most attritional combative match played by Pwllheli this season to date.This was not Barbarian rugby but a raw contest between two hugely committed sides.
Pwllheli are away to Bro on Saturday.
Pwllheli seconds lost their proud record at Menai Bridge.They lost by a solitary point when the home side were awarded a penalty in the last seconds of the match. They are away to Mold seconds on Saturday..
