Pwllheli RFC 14 Caernarfon RFC 8

Though this local derby has always been one of the highlights of the rugby season it was eclipsed by the Pwllheli's wish to celebrate the life of one of its young players who had sadly been lost at far too young an age. Some time ago the family of Robin Llyr Evans and the Club had decided that an improved facility particularly for the elderly and infirm would be a suitable way to give Robin a long term memorial at the Club.
The opening of the new extension to the stand was of course a poignant occasion for the family and friends of Robin Llyr Evans in whose memory the project was undertaken. Robin had been captain of Pwllheli Youths and was popular with his peers and coaches alike.Tragically he died in an accident while working in China  He was twenty years of age. The Club and Robin's parents - Gareth and Menai Evans - had worked  together to complete the changes which included the installation of forty seats and extended the length of the stand to over one hundred  feet.
The formal tribute to open the stand was undertaken by Doctor Dewi Roberts and witnessed by scores of family, friends and supporters.
Both teams respected the occasion by having one minutes silence before kick off.
Conditions for the game were far from ideal. The saturated pitch cut up badly and made it difficult for the players of both teams. It also contributed to the unusually high number of handling errors and the match never reached the heights that had been hoped.
Caernarfon had clearly prepared well for the fixture. They deservedly took the lead with a sixth minute penalty  by their full back Aled Jones. Pwllheli came back strongly and were rewarded with a try in the fifteenth minute from prop Elgan Davies. The conversion was slotted by Osian Parry Jones. Caernarfon lost a flanker via a yellow card on thirty minutes but the home side were unable to take advantage. Half time came with no further score with Pwllheli leading by seven points to three.
Caernarfon held the ascendancy in the third quarter both in terms of territory and possession. Pwllheli responded by making a raft of changes from the bench and the fresh legs made a difference. There was no score until the thirtieth minute. Pwllheli had for virtually the first time in the second period taken play deep into the Caernarfon half.  They gradually made ground and were awarded a scrum thirty metres out. Pwllheli edged this set piece and it gave scrum half Gwilym Parri the opportunity to snipe to the right. He caught the visitors cover off guard and he crashed through to score under the posts. Osian Jones' kick gave Pwllheli a fourteen to three lead.
Caernarfon were not done. They pressed Pwllheli and forced the home side onto the back foot. It was however a Pwllheli error in the forty fourth minute  via a miss placed kick, that gave them the opening for a well taken try by fly half Carwyn Roberts. Amazingly play continued for a further six minutes but Pwllheli held out.
The standard of the match disappointed players and supporters alike. There was no lack of commitment or effort but it was clearly difficult for the players to cope with the ever worsening pitch conditions. Caernarfon may believe they could have edged the result and they certainly had the possession to support their case. As it was Pwllheli held out and they go into the New Year on the back of yet another win against their Cofis neighbours.
Pwllheli will now need to regroup as they take on Maesteg Celtic away in the WRU Plate on Saturday. The match had been postponed before Christmas because of the adverse weather.
A much changed seconds team lost heavily in their away Division Three North  fixture to Machynlleth. On Saturday they face Benllech RFC at Bodgroes in another Division Three contest.
Pwllheli wish all their supporters, sponsors , players and officials a Happy New Year.
Another notable feature of the day was  that Pwllheli had three brothers playing for the first team. Gwilym Parri played at scrum half, Ellis Parri played at eight and Ianto Evans came on at centre. All played well and did their family  and Club proud.
