Dowlais RFC 0 Pwllheli RFC 18.

Pwllheli made an arduous five hour journey down to Dowlais with traffic holdups linked to thw Welsh Rally contributing to the delay. Any thoughts of fatigue were quickly answered as the pre -match preparations showed that the lads were up for the contest.
The match kicked off in cold and blustery conditions. The home side had a near monopoly of early possession  but Pwllheli's organised defence stood up well to Dowlais'' attacks.Sadly the match  was stopped after five minutes following what appeared to be  a serious neck injury to the home team hooker. The game was stopped for twenty minutes and as the injured player could not be moved it was decided to move the game to the adjacent second team pitch.
Pwllheli now played with the wind at their backs. Some  astute kicking gained them territory but though they came close several times they could not breach the Dowlais defence. The home team gradually  came into the game and they used their heavier pack to grind away at the Pwllheli cover. Pwllheli's set pieces generally held up well throughout the match which is a testament to the team's commitment and level of fitness.
A penalty kick by Pwllheli after eighteen minutes drifted wide of the posts and it was not until the thirty ninth minute of the injury extended half  that the first score was registered. This was  a long range effort by right wing Osian Parry Jones.
The second half started well for the Lleyn side. They quickly took advantage of a yellow card issued to the Dowlais centre.Pwllheli kicked to touch from the ensuing penalty. They took the ball cleanly and set up a driving maul before releasing the ball. The ball reached Pwllheli's flanker Tom Parry whose pace and strength took him over the whitewash. The conversion attempt missed. The highlight of Pwllheli's performance came on eighteen minutes. Pwll were able to recycle ruck ball and provide their backs with clean quick ball. The ball passed swiftly through five pairs of hands before reaching left wing Robin Hughes Jones. He beat the despairing cover to score. Osian Parry Jones added the two points to extend Pwllheli's lead to fifteen points to nil.
Dowlais did not give up and they continued to endeavour to get on the scoreboard. As the game neared its end the home side became increasingly frustrated . In the thirty ninth minute of the half this resulted in Pwllheli being awarded a penalty - which was duly slotted by Parry Jones-  and two yellow cards being issued to Dowlais players. The final whistle went a few minutes later.
The Club are delighted that the whole squad performed well on the day with flanker Harry Roberts probably having his best game for the Club.
Pwllheli RFC have sent their best wishes to the injured player and the Dowlais Club. We are delighted to report that following a thorough assessment the player has been discharged from hospital.
It does not get any easier for Pwllheli as they host host Bala RFC in a League match at Bodegroes on Saturday. Pwllheli will need to be at their best against a talented and tenacious Bala XV.
