Pwllheli RFC 20 Caernarfon RFC 18

The Lleyn side started this match slowly and Caernarfon had much more urgency about them in the early stages. True there were several key changes since the away win at Ruthin but Pwllheli took a good fifteen minutes to settle. During this period Caernarfon went ahead with a fourth minute penalty by Aled Jones. Pwllheli had a second row carded for killing the ball on twelve minutes and Jones added another three points from the ensuing penalty. This seemed finally  to stir the home side and they gradually got back into the game. Pwllheli created two clear cut chances to score but delay in passing saw both threats extinguished. With Caernarfon's bulkier pack competing well in the set pieces Pwllheli's only reward in the first period was a thirty eighth minute penalty by wing Osian Parry Jones.

The score at half time was Pwllheli three, Caernarfon six.

Pwllheli dominated the third quarter of the match. They were quicker to the loose ball and they tightened up their set piece play. Six minutes in they took the lead for the first time with a scorching try. Fly half Danial Glyn cut through the Caernarfon cover on the half way line. His pace took him beyond the defence before he passed to wing Robin Hughes Jones who touched down. The conversion attempt hit the post. Caernarfon were now very much on the back foot. Fifteen minutes in Pwllheli scored a classic long distance try. Using the blind side effectively some fine inter-passing opened a gap for flanker Tom Parry to score wide out. Jones slotted an excellent conversion. Four minutes later Pwllheli scored their third try  again by Tom Parry. Though the kick missed the home side now lead by twenty points to six. From the kick off Pwllheli's concentration lapsed and they were rightly penalised when they failed to gather the kick off and were caught offside. Caernarfon kicked for touch. From the ensuing lineout their fine number eight Rhys Evans crashed over following a maul. Aled Jones added the conversion. Pwllheli quickly regained their composure and were camped on the Caernarfon line but the visitor's stubborn defence kept them at bay. Pwllheli then yielded a penalty. Caernarfon made ground .With the half already in its forty fourth minute Pwllheli were penalised under their posts for killing the ball. Caernarfon whipped the ball out left and their wing touched down wide out for a well taken score. With  the conversion to draw the game the Caernarfon supporters were left agonised as the ball drifted wide of the right hand post. The whistle for the end of the game went immediately after.

Caernarfon will rue the dropped points but on balance Pwllheli deserved the win. The home side blew several clear cut scoring opportunities long before Caernarfon came back in the closing minutes. With Ruthin losing their third successive league match Pwllheli slip into second place behind Nant Conwy.

Pwllheli's seconnds beat their Caernafon counterparts by thirty six points to twelve with wing Mathew Butterworth scoring three of his side's six tries.

Pwllheli travel to Cobra on Saturday and they will be very wary of their opponents. Cobra always pose a huge threat when playing at home and Pwllheli will need to be at their best to come away with a win.The bus Leaves the Club at 10.45. Supporters to contact the Club beforehand please.
