Fixture

In almost perfect rugby conditions the match was played in front of  large Bank Holiday crowd. With Pwllheli having won the corresponding away fixture by only one point Ruthin will have travelled to Pwllheli with some optimism. They arrived early at Bodegroes and brought with them a good number of loyal supporters.

The opening exchanges were even with the defences of both teams being tested. Pwllheli were awarded a penalty after five minutes which was duly converted by Osian Parry Jones. Ruthin the conceded a run of penalties and Pwllheli tried to exert pressure by opting for the line out rather than kicking at goal. Staunch Ruthin defence held and they broke out and after eleven minutes equalled the score at three apiece with a good penalty  kick  by Callum Bennett.  The match oscillated between the sides as each played with commitment and verve. With Pwllheli having the edge in the loose they worked the ball ever closer to the Ruthin line. A final surge saw prop Rhys Williams crash over. Osian P.Jones slotted the conversion. On twenty four minutes it was Pwllheli's backs who created the space for full back Brunelli to score. Jones' conversion took the score to seventeen to three. Seven minutes later a skilful pick up of a loose ball saw fly half Danial Glyn leaving the Ruthin  cover floundering as he scored Pwllheli's third try. The conversion attempt hit the post. Two minutes later centre Ianto Parri seemed to have touched the ball down on the line but the try was not allowed. On thirty seven mintes Pwllheli 's flanker Tom Billington Parry scored his almost obligatory try. The kick again hit the post but the try bonus point was secured. Ruthin came back into the match in the dying seconds of the half and scored a deserved try by Gareth Morgan. Bennett added the two points.

The opening exchanges of the second period saw Pwllheli make several threatening breaks. On nine minutes Ruthin's defence was pierced with Ianto Parri adding his second score. The excellent touchline conversion by Osian P. Jones took Pwllheli up to thirty four points. Pwllheli then had their fullback yellow carded for obstruction. Ruthin took the opportunity  and scored a try on seventeen minutes by Zak Roberts. Again Callum Bennettt added the conversion to take the score to thirty four points to fourteen. The floodgates then opened and the Ruthin defence was swamped.Seven tries were scored in the fourth quarter of the match and sadly for Ruthin they were all scored by Pwllheli.

Danial Glyn scored on twenty four minutes  and he was followed four minutes later by Tom Billington Parry's second. Osian P.Jones' conversion took the score to forty six to seventeen. Centre John Pugh scored Pwllheli's eighth try and Osian P.Jones added the conversion. Three tries were then scored in five minutes by Ianto  Parri, Danial Glyn and a delightful try by Osian P.Jones who wrong footed the cover to score wide out. Jones kicked his sixth conversion. The coup de grace was inflicted by Danial Glyn who threaded his way through from fully fifty metres out. He added the conversion.

The whistle went with Pwllheli having entertained the home supporters with a blitz of scoring from twelve tries seven conversions and a single penalty. Ruthin had played their part but their defence withered in the latter stages. The scoring spree saw Pwllheli overtake Nant Conwy in the number of points scored this season. With Nant failing to score a bonus point Pwllheli stretched their lead at the top of the table to six points. Nant remain favourites as they have two games in hand but the Lleyn side are committed to focussing on the three remaining league matches this season.

Pwllheli make the short journey to Caernarfon on Saturday. Their nearest neighbour's good recent run of success came to a halt at Bala last weekend but Pwllheli know that the Caernarfon coaches will not have any difficulty  in  motivating their players for this  fixture. Pwllheli respect the threat that Caernarfon will pose and know that only the best will gave them the points they need on Saturday.
