Pwllheli were very wary of this fixture given COBRA's excellent away win at Llandudno the previous week.In hindsight this was exactly what Pwllheli needed and there was not a hint of complacency in the preparation for the match.
For the first time this season the coaches did not require multiple changes in the squad and the benefits of this continuity became more apparent as the match developed.
COBRA has talented players in key positions and backed this up with a bulky and effective pack. Pwllheli countered this with a solid front five and a mobile and fast back row. COBRA made the better start and used the wind effectively to make ground in the opening salvoes. They took the lead after only six minutes with a Llew Williams penalty. With both teams probing for weaknesses Pwllheli tried to keep the ball tight but when they lost possession COBRA hoofed the ball down field. On twenty four COBRA's fly half Williams added his second penalty. This time Pwllheli's response was cutting and effective.Flanker Tom Parry led the charge with a twenty sixth minute Try following a series of forward drives. Osian P.Jones added the conversion. It was now all Pwllheli. Three minutes later Pwllheli's full back Deio Brunelli touched down follwing a flowing long disctance counter. Not to be outdone wing Robin Hughes Jones touched down five minutes later in the far right corner after a move which started in the Pwllheli twenty two. Immediatley prior to half time Pwllheli's hardworking centre Ifan Roberts got a deserved try which Jones converted to take the half time score to Pwllheli twenty four COBRA 6.
The second half saw Pwllheli satrt well scoring their fifth try by Roberts again. With Jones adding the conversion the game appeared to be beyond COBRA's reach. However they dug deep and reduced the arrears with a try by prop Bryn Edwards. The game became a bit of an arm wrestle but on twenty three minutes Pwllheli made the game safe a try from outside centre Euros Thomas .Jones again added the two points. Pwllheli's seventh touchdown came from scrum half Butterworth who converted his own try.
COBRA regained some pride as substitute Aled Roberts was generously awarded a try by the referee when the lunge for the line was both short and knocked on. Llew Williams' conversion was the last score of the game.
This was an important result for Pwllheli but the performance was encouraging also. To score seven tries against resilient and committed opposition was no mean feat. The strength of their next opponents, unbeaten league leaders Nant Conwy , means that only their best will do from the Lleyn side.
Unfortunately Pwllheli's seconds travelled to Harlech for their Gwynedd Cup fixture with a raft of enforced changes from the side which played so well away against Bala the previous week. They went down by 23-3 to Second Division Harlech but competed well for most of the game. Pwllheli's Youth side travelled to high flying Nant Youths in the Youth Cup. They lost by 15-10 but gave a good account of themselves in the process. The seconds play Nant at Bodegroes tomorrow and the Youths are away to Wrexham.
